In December 1997, Verena finally returned with her first solo single, curiously titled ‘Finally Alone’. It was the first release on her new record label ‘Mega Records’. The title was a nod to her time with DUNE, albeit with tongue firmly in cheek, as, in reality, she had had a great time during her period with the project. It was more a reference to her inability to release music in the style she wanted to release.

The song was written by the unlikely pairing of Andreas Bruhn and Stevo Wilcken, who had previously worked with Sisters Of Mercy and Azido Da Bass, respectively. In contrast to the music styles associated with these groups/projects, “Finally Alone” was an unashamed pop ballad. Naturally, it was backed with some club remixes, to keep the DUNE fans happy.

“Finally Alone” entered the German Top 100 at No. 56 and peaked two weeks later at No. 53. It spent a total of 7 weeks on the chart.

Did you know?

  • The video was filmed in and around Hammersmith Bridge, London and was directed by Matt Broadley. Broadley had previously directed “Hand In Hand” and “Who Wants To Live Forever” for DUNE.

  • Curiously, the Maxi-Single lacked the ‘Video Version’ of “Finally Alone”. It subsequently turned out that, while originally intended to include this mix, something happened during the production of the single and the ‘Video Version’ was omitted from the final product. Mega Records quickly pressed a second promo CD to include this version (“Single Version”) and distributed it to radio stations.
